Self-serve
I was surprised this morning at the Home Depot when a young staffer offered me the option of their new self-serve check-out stations, handsomely appointed with decent directions and design.
A long time lover of shopping experience options, I can now provide myself with whatever genre of service that suits my mood. I can now serve myself surly or sullen, with traditional Japanese bows or a sincere nursing How are we today?, or with the brusque Next! barked by gnarly fish guys at the market. I can give myself tips on that wood filler, or compliment myself: Is that a new cap? Lovely, really.
It’s a new day in customer service.
