Azile

One of the nice things about living in the city, you can have accidental conversations with people walking 3 feet in front of your house past the Zen garden situated where there would otherwise be the uninspiring suburban aesthetic of “tree lawn”.

Today, the garden was visited by a group of siblings and cousins who grew up in the Liberian refugee camps and now find Cleveland their home. The first word I learn in any new language is thank you - you see the products of this learning curve below on the sidebar here at Jack/Zen. They tell me that in their native language, thank you is azile (ah-’zeal).

Azile to the joy of your being, my new friends. May you enjoy the city as we natives continue in the legacy of appreciation from our immigrant grandparents who came with as little and contributed so much.

what a lovely post, and a lovely tribute to gratitude!
(incidentally…I left Cleveland when I was twelve, and I still say “tree lawn”. Anywhere else but Cleveland, tho, and you just get a deer-in-the-headlights look :) )
