Loving the difference
Went to an art opening last night featuring seasoned and emerging Cleveland area artists and their series of public works scheduled for summer installations at various sites in the area. Each were great examples of the unique character of interesting work.
When we treat our life as art, we honor life’s natural tendency to be interesting - to be unique and different. When we allow our lives to be interesting in the sense of allowing its uniqueness, we are by definition creating that which gains no value by comparison. In loving our personal uniqueness, we stop the judgement-induced comparisons that limit our capacity to appreciate ourselves as unique. Seeing ourselves as unique is the basis for appreciating our intrinsic value as interesting.
One of my gurus growing up was the father of Gestalt therapy, Fritz Perls. He described optimum performance as being in good contact with ourselves and our world. And he defined good contact as the appreciation of differences.
May we always allow ourslves to be as different and interesting as we can be. May we defy comparisons and live to love our uniqueness. May we dare to be different.
