The act of gratitude

We take so much for granted. A zen teacher once queried: Where would we be without the garbage guys?

Where we’d be is in a public health crisis. So a few times a year I make a point to intersect the alley when these guys come through for their weekly run. This weekend I greet them with a stash of cold beers, “for later.” This time it’s the very inexpensive yet delightful Chinese beer, Yingpu. Nothing is too good for our guys.

My joy is seeing the genuine smiles on their faces and enthusiasm in their voices when they respond with humble thanks for being appreciated contributors to our shared vision of a healthy community.

    What a great idea.

I recall once reading an editorial in a medical journal which stated that the improvements in health and longevity of the 20th century could largely be attributed to improvements in sanitation and nutrition.

Indeed. I think of the millions of children worldwide whose health is compromised by contamination and pollution, not to mention agriculturally challenged land. We need to dream of a healthy world on every level.

I recently thought of the long, enduring tradtition of mail servers around the world. Everyday, 6 days a week, one shows up at your door. Even a recluse gets one visitor a day.

I’m wondering how many years it might be before I see a sanitation crew and not instantly think of you? Thanks for your constant mindfullness of the small but crucial things about life.
