Just noticing
In the grocery today, a small band of playful youth tore around a corner in awkward arrest of my forward motion. The transgression elicited from their parental unit a firm, “If you goddam kids run into another person here I’m gonna smack ya.” I smiled a genuine and patient “no harm done” smile and moved on, musing at the irony of promising rudeness as antidote to rudeness. If I needed any more time with these tikes it would be only for a light “Say you’re sorry” apology rather than fear of retribution for inevitable unconsciousness.
That is precisely why I stopped long enough to catch their eyes and smile, so that I could add just a hint of consciousness to their little lives. I am so grateful for every moment of consciousness we can achieve together.
