Responsible living

I’m reading Robert Thurman’s new work, “The Jewel Tree of Tibet” where he lists the worst possible crimes from the Tibetan Buddhist tradition: killing one’s father or mother, killing a saint, wounding a buddha, or creating division in the community.

…amazing

    So, Jack,

Does this mean that the recent Plain Dealer articles referring to the east/west divide, black/white divide etc. in the recent school levy would be considered a crime? I find that a very interesting concept because I have thought for years that the constant talk of east-west when referring to our city by elected officials, journalists and residents a decided crime against community.

Actually Gloria, you raise a great question, and yes from the Tibetan tradition, journalists and officials (the so-called “leaders”) and community are acting unethically with any reinforcement of divisions.

The question is how do we support the opposite of community division? How about if we start by even inviting conversations about just what that is? That would be new civic behaviors for this community indeed!
