Zen Luxury

There was an ad in this Sunday’s NY Times for a new richy rich city condo. Among other things, the developers promise “Zen Luxury.” My first thought: What’s this, the next new oxymoron?!

Then I settled into reflection on what is the luxury in a zen experience. Clearly zen luxury is the richness of doing everything fully; giving our whole attention to the task at hand.

In your seeing, there should be only the seeing. In your hearing, nothing but the hearing; in your smelling, tasting, and touching, nothing but smelling, tasting, and touching; in your thinking, nothing but the thought.

Tust me, if you have little kids and a chaotic house like I do, sitting zazen for six hours would be luxury of the tallest order.

Probably not whatthe developers think though…
