Getting it
As a meditation teacher, I get to understand how new it is for people to simply practice noticing thoughts, sensations, and - as Alan Watts would say - the “usual cosmic jazz” of everyday living.
What they don’t know is that it’s the same for them as it is for a 60 year old Buddhist monk. Letting come, letting go. The rhythm of seeing what is without judgment, without criticism. Without blame, without the hubris of self-righteousness.
Getting it is about getting that life is totally different when we are graced with moments of seeing it without judging it as good or bad. Just seeing it as it is; seeing our judgments as they are. And when we see them as they are, we are free from them and we are then and only then able to see things as they are.
It’s a lifelong practice, as my 80 something zen teacher John tells me. He should know. When we know … we get it.
