Authentic trust

One wise distinction in the realm of trust is the distinction between authentic and transactional trust.

In authentic trust, trust is a gift, unconditionally given. There are no rewards for trust used well or costs for trust used poorly. Any promises we make in the relationship are made and kept freely. Our actions are not contingent or controlled by others.

In transactional trust, trust is a barter, conditionally given. There are explicit or implicit rewards for trust used well and costs for trust used poorly. We make no promises without guarantee; all scores are kept.

Everything we do is an act of trust. Drinking water, driving on the road, speaking honestly, making a purchase, giving someone our time.

Transactional trust comes from a place of believing that life is and can be essentially certain; authentic trust honors the essentially uncertain nature of the universe in which we live.
