Hesselbein on leadership
Here in NY last night I had the chance to spend time chatting with Frances Hesselbein who among other things is editor-in-chief of Leader to Leader, founding president of the Drucker Foundation, chairman of the board of governors of the Leader to Leader Institute, and former chief executive of the Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. She is one of the top thought leaders internationally on leadership and an amazing human being.
A few quotes from her talk to the Robert Wood Johnson Executive Nurse Fellows where I am a mentor:
“Dispersed leadership is the leadership of the future”
“Leaders manage permission”
“The power of language is indispensable on our journey toward transformation”

Leadership in any endeavor is an an important element to success, but is less vital than commitment. In far too many instances, the children of the ’50’s and ’60’s have allowed themselves to fall into a management by consensus mentality that paralyzes fruitful actions for fear of being singled out unfavorably in the many public forums that are part of the modern media age.
Any entrepnuer knows that success is as much about luck and hard work than it is about making smart decisions. Let us not forget that those smart decisions were made becasue of how and where (s)he failed in previous attempts to achieve their goals.
