The 20 year view
I did a board retreat yesterday for a thriving urban economic development non-profit. It was gratifying to see the group’s humility as it considered the many areas of board effectiveness it needs to work on over the next year, based on a 60-item board effectiveness survey I developed recently (email me if you’d like to see it).
It was gratifying also to see the group’s passion for being more focused on possibilities than problems, and for their courage to consider possibilities 1 generation out (20 years). It was another example of how easily people get on the same side of the table when asked to reach out far enough in time. As G put it later, the 20 year view creates a lens that reveals unseen connections to the gifts of the community in the present.

I would love to see your 60-item board effectiveness survey. Which CDC do you serve?

I’ve worked with several CDCs, this one was Ohio City.

Can you post the 60 item survey? I am sure many are interested.

Julie, I see you’re with the Youngstown Incubator, which is such a great organization! Yes, I have had requests for the survey, so here’s the link to it. It still holds intellectual property rights, so let me know if you want to use it or have it modified for use.
I think your interest and many people’s interest speaks to how we’re starting to wake up to the possibility of effective boards.
